I Can See (by Chloe) Fall Just Ahead

If there were a designer or a collection that could embody a season, See by Chloe would epitomize summer.  The diffusion line from Chloe has become well known for roomy, breathable silhouettes in fun and flirty colors with tongue-in-cheek super kitschy details. (Like the cute sailors notch and square pleats on the back of the silk dress, or the chiffon bow lopped through a chunky gold chain link on the linen dress).

The designs in the much more youthful contemporary line are full of details that bring you back to your childhood days on the playground… but in a much, much, more fashionable way. (If I had worn these pieces then, I may have been able to avoid a several yearlong fashionably awkward phase)
The diffusion line was launched in 2001 by Phoebe Philo the same year she took over as Creative Director for Chloe after the departure of her dear friend Stella McCartney who left to start her own line (During this time she also developed Chloe’s “Paddington” Bag, arguably one of the most coveted “it” bags in the industry).  Trained at Central St. Martins, like all of the other British fashion powerhouses, Philo knows her stuff. She redefined not only a silhouette with this diffusion line, but also the Chloe customer.  Traditionally, Chloe is seen as a sophisticated, mature, and even austere house in the upper echelons of the fashion world.  They were known for their  body conscious avant-garde boarding haute couture ready to wear style  which they define as “luxury prêt-à-porter”  (They were in fact, considered the first French luxury fashion house to launch a ready-to-wear line, which Chloe’s founder Gaby Aghion did in 1952). Chloe, for the most part, was reserved for the fashion elite.  Under the Stella McCartney/Phoebe Philo regime however, a fresh take on the brand was in the air. Stella brought a sense of “lifestyle” to the house, while Philo infused it with a “street sensibility”.  With the introduction of See by Chloe to the market Philo took her street sensibility to a whole new level, and to a whole new customer. See by Chloe became sought after among the young, fresh, up and coming fashionista’s that resided the world over.  Interestingly enough, the See by Chloe brand, earns more revenue than its older sister Chloe.  If you take a look into Philo’s own sense of fashion it makes the playful nature of the collections all the more clear. She didn’t always take herself so seriously… in fact; she often sported diamante studded nails and even a gold tooth.  She made it a point to have fun. In recent years however, she has seriously cleaned herself up, actually looking the part as Celine’s Creative Director (She took over Celine in 2008 when Ivana Omazić was fired).

Having so much of Philo herself stamped into the collections, it’s easy to see why See by Chloe has become so popular.  The clothing is easy to wear, almost instantly recognizable without being logo driven, and it’s pretty much a smile stitched in fabric. You can’t help but think of butterflies and sunshine when you put these pieces on.  The two dresses I have in my own wardrobe are great examples of this. They make you warm and fuzzy all over, not because they keep you warm… they in fact do the opposite… but because the quirky scalloped hem, sea foam green color, and wooden detailing (that look like shells) instantly evoke images of the beach, or the bright white linen nestled neatly between rows of day glow coral and raspberry make sunglasses not an accessory but a necessity to anyone accompanying you.

Now, as August comes to a close, I’m sadly reminded that in essence, so too the summer comes to a close. While September in New England brings some of the things I love most in life… hills covered in orange and red trees, apples, and long sleeve knitwear I find myself desperately trying to cling on to those last few days where it’s appropriate to mix white with bold colors (I am making it a point to not just say “wear white,” because white despite what your mother may have taught you, is a universally accepted seasonless color now. In fact “Winter White” will be one of you hottest trends come December January and February). Or, to eke out that one last day in a silk slip dress with a bare leg. Knowing I have at least 6 months (hush, I’m sticking to 6 to make myself feel better) ahead of me of shorter days and increasingly cold weather means I hold onto these summer memories, and my summer attire like no other.
This also means that finding a way to extend these pieces into those first few weeks of fall, maybe even when Indian summer hits is also a necessity for me. Luckily, grabbing a sweater, long sleeved t, and a pair of boots is all you need to extend the life of these summer staples.
The sea foam green of the dress looks great paired back to charcoal gray. The contrast between the ultra youthful femininity of the silk dress and the nubby woolen texture of a grandfather sweater is the perfect way to pull off an adorably appropriate “Chic Mr. (or I should say Ms.) Rogers” look for fall.
Now, while the linen one shouldered number might be the most “summery” of all its actually is conducive to a few options.  First, color-blocking is perfectly on trend for fall, as is that mod 60’s silhouette. That means, for at least through Labor Day it should be allowed to join the trend party in a way suitable for the weather.  Throwing a boat neck white t under the dress and pairing it back to some rugged boots is a great solution…. I kept saying all day that I felt like a neon version of Taylor Swift. A cozy wrap cardigan provides an extra layer for when it gets even cooler.

If the boots don’t do it for you, the dress can be easily tucked into a pair of slouchy harem pants to keep your legs covered up.  I know… I know… a dress in pants???  Yes, your dresses can actually multi task. The great thing about a harem style pant, is that you can tuck the dress in, with very little bunching.

Also, while we are on the subject, I would just like to vent for a second about the versatility of a dress.  A dress is perfect for those days when you only want to worry about picking out one thing… it’s a top to bottom ensemble in and of its self. That does not however, mean it is limited to being worn alone.  Dresses can be worn under, over, or in addition to pretty much anything else you have in your closet. Don’t be afraid to let your dresses make other friends in your wardrobe; they enjoy a good supporting cast every now and then too.  Ok, sorry about that… as I was saying…. These woven khaki ones also by See by Chloe work wonders.  These pants by the way are the most comfortable pair of pants I own. The slightly cropped ankle length looks great with a heel or flat, and the pleated detailing provides another delicate dimension to an ordinary pant.  The smocked elastic finish on the back of the pant, and side zip make it so that even on your worst days (yes we all have them) they always fit with ease.  Breathable, playful, and most importantly wearable…. Signature See by Chloe.

Farwell my Fashionable Friend

So today is a bitter sweet day.

Bitter because today is my last official day of work with my fellow stylist and blogger Taryn. I've had the privledge and pleasure of working with this blogging beauty for close to two years now, and have enjoyed every moment of it. I can't tell you how sad I'll be not to see her mug every Monday-Friday.

Sweet because  in honor of her leaving, she actually wrote the sweetest post ever on her blog today. While I spend every week talking about the different designers in my wardrobe, you may not know that I actually design a little myself. Head on over to Life of a Paperdoll to check out my latest designs.

Bon Voyage Taryn! You will be missed!

Happy Birthday Padre!

Today is a rather special day, that I think deserves a rather special post- it happens to be my Dad's birthday!  Now, while I see my blog as the perfect venue to publicly plug how much I love my dearest father (that's why I'm his favorite) it also has relevance.
Dad and I

There are a lot of things I've gotten from my father. My complexion, I've been told my smile, and (as much as I hate it sometimes) even my legs.  Aside from the physical attributes, I think I've also received quite a few of his personality traits (or so I like to tell myself, because if I received even a fraction of his character, I would be that much better of a person). I definitely get my sense of humor from my dad... for better or worse. More importantly I've received my dad's appreciation for humor, and it's importance in life.  I would hope that I've received his sense of understanding, and patience. I think those traits are still developing in me everyday, but they will undoubtedly never reach the saintly level of my father (having to live with 5 girls might have something to do with his higher than human levels of each).  My father also generously passed down his "get up and go" sense of spontaneity and adventure on to me. There are few places I wouldn't explore, and often end up doing so on very short notice.
Dad and I over 20 years earlier... Clearly not much has changed

Then there are of course the things I wish he passed on... like the ability to rock grey hair flawlessly, (not that I have to worry about that yet! I just know I won't be so lucky!) and unrivaled dedication... to faith, family, and work. Even if that means no sleep, 7:30 am Mass every Sunday, or picking out all of the chocolate chips from cookie dough ice cream (for ahem, certain daughters) during Lent when they've given up chocolate.

Adidas Mens Digital Watch in Black

One thing I don't think he would ever guess in a million years though, is how he's influenced my wardrobe.  My dad is a t-shirt and jeans guy through and through, so inevitably I am always over dressed in my father's eyes. Even when I swear I just threw on a comfy dress, he always comments on how "fancy" I look. In spite of his own tastes however, he has supported me through the ups and downs of my consistently changing style.   One thing has remained constant though over the past several years, and that would be the permanent fixture on my left wrist.... a men's digital watch.  You may have noticed throughout my blog posts, no matter what I'm wearing, I always seem to have that big black watch on. This is something definitely inspired by my father.   For as long as I can remember he has worn some version or another of a black calculator watch. Whether it be Timex or Casio or something in between, my  dad has not only always been able to give the time to anyone who asks, but he can also tell you what 452 divided by .0357 is in the same breath. The watch I wear almost daily isn't a calculator watch (YET... I say yet, because i'm having a hard time letting go of my current one- I've grown quite attached- but more on this in a minute), but it is a multi-functional black digital men's watch that  I wear almost with out fail, because I'm always trying to be a little more like Dad.
Adidas White Calculator Watch

Now, the reason I said "YET"... While that calculator might be something I've poked fun of my dad for, It's something I've always loved about him and I've always secretly found (shhhh, don't tell anybody!) cool.  Not everybody can wear a calculator on their wrist and still be considered far from a nerd. My dad does this remarkably well, so I figured, we are so alike in so many other ways why not me.  So, over the past year or so I've made it a mission to find one of my own. I of course had to put my own spin on it so Dad didn't think he had a total copy cat on his hands... I wanted the infamous calculator watch in white. (GASP!) I'm happy to announce my friends, I finally have it (thanks to another special man).  Just a few short weeks ago this white calculator watch by Adidas entered my possession.  I've swapped out the original black one a few times, but like I said earlier, I'm having a hard time breaking habit. This not so little timepiece is quickly making its way into steady contention however.  And, whether it's on my wrist or on my nightstand every time I look at it I always think of my Dad which, makes it more special than even the watch itself can calculate.

Valentino my Fashion Valentine

There are a few designers in the game that have been around since it seems the dawn of Haute Couture. A few celebrated single names that everyone, regardless of their level of fashion knowledge seems to know. Ask anyone to rifle off those names and I can almost guarantee you Valentino is in the the top five.
Valentino Garavani

Valentino Garavani, the garishly tan man with an almost feline smile has been a consistently powerful player in the high-end fashion game. For over 45 years in fact his luxurious brand has been draped on the most elite of women, and coveted by us normies everywhere. He designed entire wardrobes for Jacqueline Kennedy Onasis, along with her wedding dress when she married Aristotle. He designed for Princess Diana, and the Princess of Bulgaria was a personal Muse for Valentino.

He may be most synonymous with elegant, show stopping evening gowns however.  His gowns are worn on red carpets at nearly every awards show buy the latest and greatest in Hollywood style icons. This red carpet presence  is actually quite fitting. Valentino's beginnings were filled with silver screen dreams. At a young age he became fascinated with the likes of Veronica Lake, Elizabeth Taylor, and Rita Hayworth. He knew he wanted to create ladies fashion, for beautiful women. He wanted to make already beautiful women look even more beautiful, and since 1962 after his first significant fashion show at Pitti Palace in Florence, Italy, he's been doing just that. And ever since then, he's been sticking to his guns, being one of the few remaining courtiers who still does everything by hand. In fact, with over 100 seamstresses on staff only 1 sewing machine exists in the studio.

Along with help from his head seamstress Antoinette de Angelis and his longtime love, business partner, and essentially other half, Giancarlo Giammetti Valentino has developed a brand that spans across women's ready-to-wear,couture, men's wear, accessories, and fragrances along with two diffusion lines: Valentino Roma and Valentino R.E.D.

He's also developed a signature style defined by classic femininity, elegant silhouettes, and sophisticated glamour.... the epitome of "Lady Chic." Along with those womanly forms, comes a few Valentino signatures, such as bows, interestingly enough the pyramid stud... and of course, his signature intensely saturated "Valentino Red". (Although his ground breaking "White" collection of 1968 would go down in history as well).

I could go on and on, but I have to say, you should watch Valentino: The Last Emperor by Acolyte Films. There's no way to learn more about a designer than by seeing him in his natural element. And as far as fashion documentaries go, its highly entertaining, I'd definitely recommend it.

After watching this movie you'll see the group has gone through it's fair share of drama. And you'll also notice I talk about Valentino like he's still designing, which he is not... but his legacy lives on.  In 2007 he retired, and after a brief stint with Alessandra Faccinetti (former women's wear designer for Gucci) as creative director, Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri took the reigns in Fall of 2009.

Even in his absence however, the name continues to go strong. And while Valentino himself once took inspiration from the silver screen, it is now clear he himself serves as a point of inspiration for the brand. It was incredibly apparent in the Spring and Fall runways that Pier and Maria looked back to the originator of the brand to return the Valentino name to its oh so elegant roots once more.

Fall's Fashion Forecast

As if dressing mannequins at work in sweaters and tights wasn't a big enough hint, the shorter days and cooler evenings have begun to remind me that fall is just around the corner. While I thrive in the heat of the summer, and despise the cold (in spite of the fact that I have lived my entire life surviving one brutal winter after the other in the Northeast) I happen to LOVE the fall fashion season. It's actually my favorite.  So, with the trends in full preview this week, I thought I'd do a little highlight on some of my favorite fall trends... and one I'm still deciding on.

"Lady Chic" seems to be the phrase that can sum up your fall fashion season. Pieces are polished, delicate, and sophisticated. The best ones seem to have a decidedly classic feel. Everyone from Aquilino.Rimondi to Zac Posen introduced a more feminine look for fall.

I have to say that both Elie Saab and Donna Karen's take on the classically feminine woman for the fall is amazing... nostalgically vintage but with modern touches that add interest, movement, and even a bit of austerity to otherwise dainty silhouettes.

Shades of  wine seem take this look to that next level of luxury. Bordeaux, Cabernet, Shiraz any which way you call it these intoxicating hues are rich and complementary on nearly every skin tone. Paired back to pops of red, or even jade you end up with a luxe look that's fresh and flattering.

You'll also notice, the traditional pointed toe flat pump is now popping up all over the runways. This is the one I haven't quite decided on yet, but they are definitely making a come back.

Now, I knew I had the pumps in my closet from circa 2002... I figured I'd dust them off for the day and give them another shot. But what to wear for that modern lady like look? Then it donned on me.. no one, (and I mean no one) knows "Lady Chic" better than Valentino. As the oldest "Emperor" in the biz, he has spent 45 years perfecting, defining, and redefining classic femininity at its finest. In fact, he has such a long and rich history, I'll be saving that for a post entirely on its own this week. It just so happens I have a pair of  Valentino silk chiffon tapered pant with tortoise shell button  detailing and grosgrain ribbon waistline from many moons ago. Nothing is quite as feminine as silk chiffon, so combining that with Valentino's sense of proportion and draping and they are the perfect pant for keeping on par with the seasons biggest trend.... and luckily for me they also happen to be a lovely shade of Zinfandel (no no no, not like the horribly pink white Zinfandel from a box, but a true inky purple Zinfandel). Topped off with a silky black top also by Valentino, I was feeling perfectly on trend (albeit a little a head of schedule).

The perfect thing about this "Lady Chic" outfit, is that its perfect just on its own, the accessories and layering can be kept to a minimum because the subtle details found on the pockets and pleats of the pants, or the twisted rope detailing in the top speak for themselves. However, it's easy to throw on a few simply pieces and take the look from day to night.

Adding a simple jacket can complete the "Lady Chic" perfect for work. Your professional, polished, and put together (the three p's your looking for in workplace attire) This tweed and lace jacket by Rebbecca Taylor has just the right amount of delicate touches and a slightly throw back silhouette to make the perfect accompaniment.

If this girly look is a little too cloying for your taste, I get it. I like a little dichotomy in life, I like my outfits to have a little contrast in some way or another. A great way to add a bit of an edge to something utterly effeminate look is to add a few masculine touches. A little metal and leather can go along way. Pewter hued accessories and a suede fringed vest provide just the right amount of contrast.

I have to say, I'm pretty excited for what the fall fashion season has to offer. The big trends are universal, every girl can pull them off in one way or the other, and what's nice, is as you can see by me dragging out shoes from 2002, they are trendy pieces that can extend way beyond the life of a trend.

A Grand Change of Pace

I should warn you before you go any further, this is a pretty photo heavy post. If it takes forever to load, my advanced apologies. I think it'll be worth it if you bear with me though.

I should also give the disclaimer, I'm not talking about a designer, or fashion really at all in this post. As much as I love getting all dressed up and would love to throw on that perfect cocktail dress and pumps every night, believe it or not, I spend a considerable amount of my free time in a well-weathered pair of Northface hiking sneakers. While I do most of my hiking in the Northeast among pine trees and peaceful babbling brooks I figured It was about time I kicked it up a notch.... I needed a bit of an adventure, and a drastic change of scenery.

I also needed a bit of Zen in my life. There are times every now and then where you need the world to stop, if not for the days you wish it could, then a few hours, or at the very least a few moments. When the usual tactics for finding your center (or whatever it is you want to call it) seem to be completely derailed by life in general. It's times like this when sometimes it's necessary to get away from it all, and plant yourself in a place where you realize there's a grander scheme in life, where you can't help but think of absolutely nothing else other than what's in front of you and embrace that singular present moment. Where you can let the epic visual impact wash every other thought away.

There are are few places more perfect for that than the Grand Canyon, which is where I planted myself.  Planted is the wrong word, given there was a considerable amount of walking involved. I took a much needed hike down the South Rim to Cedar Ridge, and back up.  After which I perched myself on the edge to gaze upon an awe inspiring sunset. Both the hike and the sunset, were exactly what I needed and an experience I will never forget. So without me rambling on too much longer... I hope you get a a taste of that refreshing quiet I experienced in the Canyon  while going through pictures from the trip.... and you can see that though you may have to wear sneakers and a sports bra.... it isn't a total "look" loss. Wearing a breathable boho top, a belt with detachable pouch (2011's modern version of a fanny pack) topped off with effortless "dirty hippie" hair actually makes for an on (spring/summer) trend earth child communes with nature look.

So without further adieu...

The view on the South Kaibab Trail

Just for sense of scale, that's a person sitting under the tree
The trail itself went through several changes in terrain over a relatively short distance... definitely a fun"reverse" hike you feel more than accomplished after completing. The deeper into the Canyon you go, the redder and rockier it gets.

I was surprised at how much vegetation there was too...

And of course the textures in the rock formations were incredible...

A nice overlook at Cedar Ridge, a common turnaround point on the trail. There was an amazing uprooted tree on the plateau... of course that means a necessary narcissistic photo shoot is involved.

And after the strenuous hike back up the to Canyon rim... a breathtaking sunset was my reward

Everyone I talked to prior to going to the Grand Canyon said it was a life changing experience, so I went in with pretty high expectations. Whatever I imagined it would be actually paled in comparison to reality... that doesn't happen often. It was so much better than I could have imagined, I just wish I had so much more time there... but I'll cherish that little moment of clarity forever.
